Fair Trade Boston
What is Fair Trade?
Fair Trade is a way of doing business that ensures that farmers of commodity products, like coffee, tea, and sugar, get a fair price for their goods, as well as other community and social investments. Third-party non-profits are responsible for certifying products as “Fair Trade.” For more information, including the logos to watch out for, visit: TransFair.
The Campaign
The Fair Trade Boston campaign is one year old! Five Fair Trade Teams, based in local churches, have already helped over 12 businesses, organizations, and churches switch to Fair Trade in the quest to make Greater Boston a Fair Trade Town!
If you’re interested in working with a team in your area, please contact Sandy at sandy (at) bostonfaithjustice (dot) org.
Fair Trade Towns:
The Fair Trade Towns movement began in the UK, and is now more active than ever in the U.S! To be a Fair Trade Town, a town or city must meet the following criteria:
1. Fair Trade products are widely available in stores, cafes, and restaurants (1 store / 10,000 people)
2. Fair Trade products are widely available in churches, schools, workplaces, hospitals and other institutions (1 / 5,000 people)
3. Media attention and support for Fair Trade
4. A Fair Trade Coalition engaging business, non-profit, educational, and faith-based institutions
5. A resolution committing the town or city government to using Fair Trade products where applicable.
If you know of a local Fair Trade business or institution, please let us know by filling out the form below!
