Great post. I've read Dr. Todd's book and I agree, it is so inspiring. He presents information about the battle against extreme poverty in an engaging, positive way that makes it easy not only to understand, but also makes you want to do something to get involved.
I love his explanation of Jesus' words "the poor will always be with you." As you mentioned, Jesus is quoting from a passage in Deuteronomy, which his listeners would have not only recognized, but probably had memorized. By referring to part of Deut. 17:11, Jesus was reminding his listeners of that whole passage. The end of that Old Testament verse says "Therefore I command you to be open-handed toward your brothers and toward the poor and needy in your land." Jesus was not calling us to give up or resign ourselves to the reality of poverty, he was calling us to be generous! which is exactly what this book calls us to do.

Really excellent, Julie. Your heart and passion for this really comes through. Worship is not just singing songs, it's how we live our life to glorify Him. Great thoughts.

Homelessness is one of the many things that is usually airbrushed out of the media. Living in a tent should be by choice.

Paul,
the answer that question is usually a resounding YES. I'd suggest looking on Equal Exchange's web site (www.equalexchange.coop) to learn more about their work. Environmental sustainability is a core element of the way in which they work, and it fits with their holistic mission that does not separate "people work" from "environment work".

I am just now starting to investigate which Stop and Shops are carrying the bananas, and would love it if you and others post notes if you visit a store and see (or don't see) them.

Thanks,
Ben

Hey Ben,

This is exciting news! Stupid question: are fair trade bananas grown in environmentally sustainable ways? Do fair trade bananas = organic bananas?

Thanks,
-Paul

Father Mike,
thanks for your comments! You raise some important questions, and I would love to send you some resources on how to advocate for Fair Trade in your neighborhood. E-mail me with your contact information and mailing address, and I will send you a packet of information that will be helpful in working with local grocers.

Thanks for your questions and comments!
